The centre of the universe, and other attractions

Well that was different to usual.

Our story begins on Sunday night. I went to church (no link, because our so-called web site is an abomination. oops too late.), first time at my church for 4 weeks or something crazy like that (being in Victoria for 3 weekends does that to you). Was good to be back home.

Came home, got a somewhat early night. Was rudely awoken by clammy at 11pm sending me an SMS saying something along the lines of "Morning!". It wasn't even morning yet. Crazy Victorian.

Rudely awoken again by noise from my mobile phone at 5am. This time it was my alarm. I love mornings. Not.

At this point I probably should explain that I found myself getting the job of arriving at 9:30am at one of our new (work) sites at Eaton. For those less familiar with WA geography, Eaton is about 5 minutes north of Bunbury... which is about 2.5 hours south of Perth. And thus 3.5 hours south of my place in peak morning traffic.

So a country drive, made far more interesting by a few typical WA drivers (I've decided that Melbourne drivers are rude and arrogant, and WA drivers (especially SOR Perth) just don't know how to drive. I'm undecided which is worse.), and some nice wet roads and heavy rain (always fun in a car I'm not used to... specifically the company car I took), and I find myself there.

Today's job, install a bunch of IP Phones at the new site, and teach the staff there how to use them. And while I'm at it, teach the staff at the site next door how to use the same phones they've been using for 2 years (well, how to transfer calls and stuff properly, they managed to figure out the "pick it up and dial the number" bit themselves).

So after much messing around (and crawling around peoples desks trying to plug cables into ports that we can't see the port number on, see previous post), the work was done by about 2:50pm (no it didn't quite take that long, i got a bunch of "oh while you're here..." stuff from people. The joys of being an IT guy.)

And then I drove back. Via the centre of the universe. And bringing me to the point of this post. That I've now forgotten, but there's a photo of the sign. The so-called center of the universe is this dinky little roadhouse that's about halfway between Perth and Bunbury. (I had something really witty to say about it here, but I forgot it with the rest of this post that I typed up first).

Drove the rest of the way back home, went out to small group tonight (again, great to be back "home" in my church, and hang out with those guys), then came home and blogged this (after the customary Gush check-in, blah blah blah)

And there's my suddenly ending, anticlimatic blog post. I've just decided that I'm actually somewhat tired, having been awake for over 20 hours, and a good 5-6 hours of it on the road.

Goodnight!

IT Tips: The more creative uses for camera phones

(Yeah so I blatantly stole the "IT Tips" thing from Paul. Deal with it.)

Ever have to plug in someone's IP phone (or computer for that matter) and find that they've helpfully already shoved their desk up next to the wall with the network points on it? Have just enough space to get your hand in to plug their network cable in, but not enough to see what the number on the port is?

Problem solved with a quick flick of a certain device out of my pocket.
